On 06/03/2021, an off-duty Phoenix police officer encountered William Alexander Brookins Sr. in a parking lot near 15th Avenue and Camelback Road. Brookins was holding a firearm and pointing it at two people who were believed to have shoplifted from a nearby business. The officer ordered Brookins to drop the weapon. Brookins did not comply. The officer opened fire, striking Brookins. Brookins was transported to a hospital, where he remained hospitalized and died from his injuries on 06/08/2021. Police later stated that the business involved had not been robbed. The officer involved was not publicly identified.
