OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 06/13/2021, Denver police responded to reports of gunfire involving a parked vehicle near Yosemite Street and East Colfax Avenue. Officers located a damaged vehicle and later encountered Duane Manzanares Jr., who was 30 years old and reportedly had been drinking. Police stated they observed a firearm handle visible at his waistband. Officers opened fire and killed Manzanares during the encounter. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Denver District Attorney later ruled the shooting justified. In 2025, the City of Denver approved a civil settlement with Manzanares’s family related to the shooting, acknowledging the death while avoiding admission of wrongdoing.
