On 06/13/2021, Bakersfield police attempted a traffic stop near Cottonwood Road and East Brundage Lane. Joe Ruiz did not stop, and police chased his vehicle through the area. During the pursuit, Ruiz’s vehicle collided with another car. After the crash, police confronted Ruiz outside the vehicle. Officers opened fire during the encounter, striking Ruiz multiple times. Ruiz was transported to Kern Medical Center with critical gunshot injuries and died three days later. He was 25 years old.
