On 06/13/2021, Hawaii police responded to reports of a domestic disturbance at a residence on Mokuhonua Lane in Hilo. Multiple officers arrived and attempted to make contact with occupants inside the home. After initial interaction, police entered the residence to conduct a welfare check. Police reported that Ryan Santos later emerged from the kitchen holding a rifle. Police engaged him in a shootout and that Santos exited the home while shots continued. An officer opened fire and Santos was struck and killed. Santos was 34 years old. Reporting indicates police fired more than 30 rounds during the encounter. An investigation into the shooting was pending at the time of coverage.
