OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 06/14/2021, Birmingham police chased Armonda Contreras after a vehicle pursuit in the East Lake area. Police reported that Contreras exited his vehicle and entered the Tienda Y Taqueria Mexican restaurant on 1st Avenue North. Inside the restaurant, police stated that Contreras threw bottles toward officers. Police deployed a Taser and engaged Contreras in a physical struggle. During the encounter, officers stated that Contreras reached toward an officer’s Taser. Police opened fire and shot Contreras, killing him at the scene. He was 43 years old. Reporting at the time did not indicate that Contreras was armed with a firearm. The investigation into the police shooting was reported as pending.
