On 06/18/2021, San Diego County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of a suspicious person in a vacant lot on Eolus Avenue in Encinitas. Deputies made contact with Eric Scott Anderson at the location. Police reported that Anderson displayed a handgun during the encounter. Deputies opened fire and shot Anderson, killing him at the scene. Anderson was 40 years old. Authorities released limited information about the events leading up to deputies opening fire. The San Diego County District Attorney later ruled the shooting justified.
