On 06/19/2021, deputies with the Lee County Sheriff’s Office and officers with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency responded to reports of an individual holding a shotgun on Lee Road 206 in Salem. Police encountered Jeff Melvin at the scene and established a standoff. During the response, officers contacted Melvin’s mother, who stated that her son had mental health issues. Police reported that Melvin continued holding the shotgun during negotiations. Officers stated that Melvin later aimed the shotgun toward them. Police opened fire and shot Melvin, killing him at the scene. He was 20 years old. Reporting indicated that Melvin was holding a shotgun during the encounter.
