On 06/21/2021, Newton County sheriff’s deputies went to a residence along Georgia Highway 162 to arrest Alexander Matthew Collins in connection with multiple outstanding warrants. Deputies attempted to take Collins into custody at the home, but he did not come outside. Police then called a SWAT team to assist. After an extended police presence, Collins exited the residence. Police reported that Collins produced a firearm and fired shots during the encounter. Deputies engaged Collins and opened fire, killing him at the scene. Collins was 27 years old.
