OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 06/21/2021, Arvada police responded to an active shooting at the Olde Town Arvada shopping area on West 57th Avenue. A gunman had shot and killed a police officer at the scene. John Hurley, who was present, moved toward the shooter and fired his personal handgun, striking and disabling the gunman. After the shooter was down, Hurley picked up the rifle that had been used in the attack. When Arvada police officers arrived, an officer encountered Hurley holding the rifle. Police opened fire and shot Hurley, killing him at the scene. Hurley was 40 years old. The Jefferson County District Attorney later ruled the shooting justified. The City of Arvada later reached a civil settlement with Hurley’s family related to the shooting.
