OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 06/23/2021, a Maricopa County sheriff’s deputy encountered a vehicle that had crashed in the median of southbound Grand Avenue near State Route 303 in Surprise. As the deputy approached the crashed vehicle, police reported that Michael Lee Gerhart fired shots toward the deputy. The deputy opened fire and shot Gerhart, killing him at the scene. Gerhart was 22 years old. Reporting did not indicate that any deputies were injured. The Maricopa County Attorney’s Office later cleared the deputy involved in the shooting.
