On 06/23/2021, Alcorn County sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported disturbance at a residence on County Road 742 in Walnut. Deputies encountered Robert Alan Blackburn at the scene. According to reporting, deputies stated Blackburn was holding a knife and did not put it down when instructed. Deputies deployed a Taser and pepper spray during the encounter. Blackburn moved away from deputies and later returned to the area, where a Taser was deployed again. Deputies then opened fire and shot Blackburn, killing him at the scene. Blackburn was 39 years old. Family members later stated he was experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of the encounter. The investigation into the deputy shooting was reported as pending.
