On 07/10/2021, Avondale police officers responded to a call reporting a “suspicious person” near West Van Buren Street and North 111th Avenue. Officers encountered James Holland Sr. Police described Holland as being in a mental health crisis. During the encounter, officers used a Taser multiple times and restrained Holland on the ground. Video and reporting later showed an officer pressing a knee into Holland’s back while he was restrained. Holland became unresponsive and died shortly afterward. He was 37 years old. The Maricopa County Attorney cleared the officers of criminal charges. The city of Avondale later agreed to a multimillion-dollar civil settlement with Holland’s family.
