On 07/12/2021, Larry Luis Mendez was shot and killed by officers with the Fontana Police Department in Ontario, California, following a traffic stop that escalated into a police pursuit. Police attempted to stop Mendez for traffic violations. The driver continued driving, and officers escalated a chase that moved onto the Interstate 10 freeway. The pursuit ended when police boxed in Mendez’s vehicle. Police reported that officers ordered Mendez to show his hands. Moments later, an officer opened fire, striking Mendez. He died at the scene. A firearm was later reported inside the vehicle. In April 2025, the San Bernardino County District Attorney released its findings and declined to file charges.
