On 07/15/2021, Matthew James Sova was shot and killed by Los Angeles Police Department officers on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. Police responded to multiple calls reporting a man holding what appeared to be a firearm in a crowded tourist area. Officers located Sova near 6776 Hollywood Boulevard. According to police, officers confronted him and opened fire, killing him at the scene. Investigators later confirmed that the object Sova was holding was a toy gun. In November 2022, the California Department of Justice released its review and declined to file charges against the officers involved.
