OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/24/2021, Boise Police Department officers responded to reports of a person staying in an alley near North 21st Street and Madison Avenue. Officers located 31-year-old Forrest T. Moore and attempted to contact him.
According to Boise police, Moore was holding what appeared to be a handgun and pointed it toward one of the officers. An officer fired, striking Moore. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators later determined that the object Moore was holding was a realistic-looking BB gun rather than a firearm. The Ada County Critical Incident Task Force investigated the shooting, and the Ada County Prosecutor's Office later concluded the officer's use of deadly force was legally justified under Idaho law. The officer involved was not publicly identified.
Moore's family questioned the shooting and noted that the object was not a real firearm. The case drew attention to the dangers posed by realistic replica weapons and the difficulty officers face in distinguishing them from actual firearms during rapidly unfolding encounters.
