On 07/25/2021, Kern County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a report of shots fired at a residence in Wasco. During their response, deputies encountered Jose Manuel Ramirez Jr., who climbed onto the roof of the home. According to investigators, Ramirez exchanged gunfire with responding deputies, beginning a standoff that lasted for several hours.
During the confrontation, Kern County Sheriff's Deputy Phillip Campas was fatally shot and another deputy was wounded. After approximately five hours, deputies shot and killed Ramirez. Following the shooting, deputies entered the residence and discovered three people dead inside the home. They were later identified as Ramirez's two young sons and the children's mother.
The Kern County Sheriff's Office requested that the Kern County District Attorney's Office investigate the deputy-involved shooting. Publicly available records do not indicate that the deputies involved were publicly identified or that the investigation resulted in criminal charges against any law enforcement officer.
