On 07/28/2021, Jonathan Andrew Pears was shot and killed by a deputy with the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office in Wetumpka, Alabama. Deputies responded to a domestic dispute at a home after Pears’ mother called 911 because she was concerned about his behavior. Officers located Pears in the front yard of the residence holding a large knife. According to law enforcement, officers repeatedly ordered Pears to drop the knife. Pears walked toward deputies while holding the knife, and an officer fired multiple rounds, striking him. Pears was pronounced dead at the scene. Pears’ family later filed a wrongful death lawsuit alleging excessive force, saying Pears was acting in a mental health crisis related to PTSD and was not posing an imminent threat when shot.
