On 08/05/2021, Webb City police responded to a call reporting trespassing and illegal dumping near East Fountain Road in Joplin, Missouri. Officers encountered several people in a truck with an attached trailer. During the encounter, a physical confrontation occurred between officers and individuals at the scene. According to police statements, Aler Ronald Escobar-Velasquez gained control of an officer’s Taser during the struggle and used it while the officer was on the ground. Police reported that Escobar-Velasquez then attempted to access the officer’s firearm. An officer opened fire, killing Escobar-Velasquez at the scene. The death was reported as pending investigation, and no officers were charged.
