On 08/09/2021, at approximately 11:33 p.m., Whitfield County Sheriff's deputies responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire near Highway 41 and Westgate Drive in Rocky Face. Deputies encountered 63-year-old Steven Ray Bailey, who was armed with a handgun. Deputies attempted to negotiate with Bailey for several minutes. During the encounter, Bailey fired at the deputies, who returned fire, striking him multiple times. Deputies rendered medical aid before Bailey was transported to Hamilton Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation conducted the independent investigation.
