OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/11/2021, Honolulu police responded to a parking lot after reports that a man had been slashed on the hand. Officers identified Elia S. Laeli at the scene and reported that he was holding a machete. According to police, officers approached Laeli as he attempted to get into a vehicle and ordered him to drop the machete. Police stated that Laeli did not comply and moved toward an officer while raising the machete. Two officers fired multiple shots, killing him at the scene. The Honolulu Prosecuting Attorney’s Office later reviewed the case and ruled the shooting justified.
