On 08/11/2021, at approximately 12:15 p.m., a Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy assigned to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station conducted a traffic stop on a frontage road adjacent to Interstate 5 near Templin Highway in Castaic. The driver, 34-year-old Adrian Joel Sanchez of Long Beach, exited the vehicle and was being escorted toward the patrol car when he broke free and ran up a nearby hillside. Sanchez then turned back, reentered his vehicle, and attempted to flee. As he accelerated away, the deputy became caught in the moving vehicle and was dragged. During the incident, the deputy fired his service weapon, striking Sanchez. Sanchez brought the vehicle to a stop a short distance away and was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators recovered a handgun from inside the vehicle.
The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner identified the decedent as Adrian Joel Sanchez later that day. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau investigated the shooting, and the California Attorney General's Office was notified under the state's officer-involved shooting review requirements.
