On 08/14/2021, Nebraska State Patrol officers responded to a disturbance involving neighbors in St. Paul, Nebraska, after reports that a firearm had been discharged. Officers searched the area and encountered John Vogel nearby holding a rifle. According to reporting, officers said Vogel moved the rifle in the direction of officers during the encounter. Officers opened fire, killing Vogel at the scene. A grand jury later reviewed the incident and cleared the officers of criminal wrongdoing.
