On 08/21/2021, Liberty County Sheriff’s Office SWAT deputies killed 45-year-old Daryl Jay Carr during an approximately six-hour standoff at 186 Maggie Lane in Allenhurst.Deputies initially went to the residence at approximately 5:30 a.m. after a 911 call reporting a domestic dispute. According to the GBI, the encounter developed into a hostage situation involving Carr’s wife, their two children and a third child who was not related to the family. The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office deployed its SWAT team, established a perimeter and staged emergency medical personnel nearby.
SWAT negotiators communicated with Carr for several hours. According to investigators, negotiations resulted in the three children being released from the house. Police alleged that Carr threatened to shoot deputies if they entered. Carr’s wife remained inside after the children were released but eventually escaped through a second-story window. SWAT personnel had positioned a trampoline below the window, and she jumped onto it to escape.
After determining that continued negotiations were no longer effective, deputies decided to enter the residence. SWAT deployed tear gas and a flash-bang grenade. At approximately 11:45 a.m., deputies attempted to enter through the front door and encountered Carr on the upstairs landing. Gunfire followed and Carr was struck multiple times. Deputies recovered a firearm at the scene. Carr was transported to Liberty Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
There is an important discrepancy in the early public accounts concerning who fired the fatal shots. The GBI's initial release stated only that deputies encountered Carr on the upstairs landing and “shots were fired,” followed by Carr being struck multiple times. Liberty County Sheriff William Bowman separately told reporters immediately afterward that investigators had not yet determined whether Carr had shot himself or had been shot by deputies. Later accounts characterized Carr's death as a fatal police shooting, and the GBI ultimately placed the case on its official list of 2021 officer-involved shootings, marking the incident as fatal.
