On 08/24/2021, officers from the Payson Police Department responded to reports that a man had forced a woman into a vehicle at gunpoint in the area of 401 E. Highway 260 in Payson, Arizona. Police located the vehicle and commanded the woman to exit. According to police statements, as the woman was being assisted by officers, the man exited the vehicle and made a motion that police described as reaching toward his waistband. Officers ordered the individual to stop and show his hands and police allege that he did not comply with those commands. Police then fired at the individual, and he was struck by gunfire. The man was later pronounced dead by medical personnel. Authorities have not publicly stated that a weapon was found at the location. An investigation by the Arizona Department of Public Safety was underway, and no charges had been announced at the time of initial reporting.
