On 09/11/2021, Winnebago County sheriff’s deputies responded to a reported assault at the Leisure Manor residence on Van Buren Street in Thompson, Iowa. Police stated a deputy encountered James Anderson, a resident at the address. Police stated Anderson told deputies the 911 call was a ruse and that no assault had occurred. Police reported Anderson was despondent over a recent medical diagnosis. Police alleged Anderson was holding a handgun and pointed it toward deputies. A deputy opened fire and shot and killed Anderson.
