On 09/13/2021, a federal agent deputized as a U.S. Marshal attempted to serve federal and state arrest warrants on Michael Jonathan Cortez at a store on Fruitvale Avenue in Oakland, California. Police stated surveillance video showed the agent arrive with a weapon drawn and approach the storefront. Police stated the video does not capture what occurred inside. Police alleged the agent gave verbal commands at the door and that Cortez attempted to exit the store, making contact with the agent. Police alleged Cortez then produced a handgun. The agent opened fire and shot and killed Cortez.
