On 09/18/2021, Charleston County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to reports of gunfire in the 2500 block of Mona Avenue in West Ashley. Deputies said the subject was firing a weapon and struck a patrol vehicle with gunfire. Officers then exchanged fire with the subject. Deputy Nicholas Vecchione fired at and struck Jason Husted, who later died from a gunshot wound at a hospital. The incident was investigated by the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division.
