OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 09/28/2021, Anaheim police said they were looking for Brandon Anthony Lopez after a report of a stolen vehicle. Police stated officers attempted a traffic stop and Lopez continued driving, resulting in a pursuit. Police said the vehicle later stopped at Bristol Street and Santa Ana Boulevard, where officers attempted to negotiate his surrender. Family members arrived and told police Lopez had expressed wanting police to kill him. Officers deployed tear gas into the vehicle. Police alleged Lopez exited holding a black object they believed was a gun, and officers opened fire, killing him. Police later said the object was a bag containing a crumpled water bottle.
