On 10/08/2021, law enforcement officers from the Evans County Sheriff’s Office and the Hagan Police Department were operating a license checkpoint in Evans County, Georgia, when Ramone Javaris Dwight drove through the area and continued driving instead of stopping. Police chased the vehicle through the area at high speeds. During the chase, police reported gunfire involving the vehicle. The pursuit ended near Ponderosa Road and Firetower Road, where Dwight exited the vehicle and additional gunfire occurred between Dwight and officers. An Evans County deputy and a Hagan police officer opened fire, striking Dwight. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation took over the case for independent review.
