OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 10/08/2021, officers from the National City Police Department responded to reports of an alarm activation at a self storage facility in National City, California. Officers encountered Brian Umana outside the facility holding a machete and acting erratically. Police attempted to detain him using a Taser and a police dog, which did not end the encounter. Police then opened fire, striking Umana. He died at the scene. The San Diego County District Attorney’s Office later ruled the shooting justified. The City of National City later reached a civil settlement with Umana’s family.
