On 10/11/2021, Richmond County sheriff’s deputies stopped a vehicle in Augusta, Georgia, citing a license plate cover violation. Jermaine Jones Jr. was riding in the rear passenger seat along with family members. Deputies requested consent to search the vehicle, and another deputy arrived with a K9 that police said alerted to narcotics. Deputies reported finding a handgun and a crack pipe under the rear seat where Jones had been sitting. Jones exited the vehicle and ran from deputies. An officer deployed a Taser during the arrest. Jones was taken into custody and later experienced a medical emergency. He was hospitalized and died approximately one week later. The Richmond County District Attorney’s Office later cleared the involved officers. Jones’s family filed a civil lawsuit related to the incident.
