On 10/28/2021, Tama County sheriff’s deputies responded to reports of shots fired in the town of Chelsea. Deputies encountered Dewey Dale Wilfong III in the area. The sheriff’s office stated that Wilfong was holding a handgun and that gunfire occurred during the response. A deputy opened fire and shot Wilfong, killing him at the scene. Family members and witnesses later disputed the sheriff’s office account of events, including claims about Wilfong’s actions immediately before he was shot. The shooting was reviewed and cleared. Wilfong’s family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Tama County, which was later voluntarily dismissed by the family.
