OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 12/29/2021, Paterson police investigated an earlier incident and encountered Thelonious McKnight near East Main Street and Hillman Street shortly before 9 p.m. A Paterson police detective fired his service weapon during the encounter and killed McKnight. Investigators recovered a handgun near him and documented multiple shell casings at the intersection. Authorities transferred the investigation to the New Jersey Attorney General’s Office. A state grand jury reviewed evidence including video, witness testimony, and autopsy findings and later voted not to file criminal charges against the detective in December 2023.
