OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 12/23/2021, Springfield Police responded to reports of gunfire at an apartment complex on East Norton Road and received additional reports that Richard R. McCormick was attempting to enter an apartment while holding a firearm. Officers encountered him outside the building and issued commands to drop the weapon. Police reported McCormick turned and directed the firearm toward officers. Two officers opened fire and struck him multiple times. He died at the apartment complex. Authorities initiated review of the use of force and reported no charges against the involved officers.
