On 11/22/2021, Merced Police Department officers responded to reports of an armed robbery at a convenience store on G Street and learned a second robbery attempt had occurred nearby. Witnesses directed officers toward Rodolpho Antonio Ruiz, and officers chased him through a residential area after locating him while he was carrying a gun. Officers confronted him and gunfire occurred after he did not relinquish the weapon. Officers shot him and he died at the scene. Reporting described the earlier incidents including a store employee held at gunpoint and shots fired inside a business prior to the police encounter, and investigators recovered a firearm and reviewed surveillance and body camera footage as part of the inquiry.
