On 11/17/2021, Poplar Bluff Police Department officers responded to a burglar alarm at a business along Highway 53 shortly after midnight and encountered Bennie D. Foster outside the location. Officers confronted him while he was holding a weapon and fired their weapons during the encounter, striking him. He was pronounced dead at the scene by the county coroner. Authorities identified him later that day, placed four involved officers on administrative leave, and the Missouri State Highway Patrol conducted the investigation.
