On 11/14/2021, Columbia Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire at a lounge near 19 N Fifth St and located Quillan Jacobs leaving the area while holding a firearm. Officers pursued him on foot and fired their weapons during the encounter, striking him. He died from his injuries. Prosecutors later reviewed the shooting and declined charges, and family members challenged the account through litigation and public advocacy that led to continued community scrutiny and eventual settlement of a civil lawsuit.
