OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 11/11/2021, Gunnison Police Department officers responded to the Garden Walk Apartments at 802 N. Colorado Street after a report of a person sleeping in a vehicle that records indicated had been reported stolen. Officers contacted Gerry Donald Cooper in the parking lot and he drove away, striking parked vehicles and police vehicles while attempting to leave. During the encounter an officer became entangled with the moving vehicle and officers fired their weapons at the driver. Cooper was struck and died at the scene. Authorities later conducted review of the shooting and no criminal charges were filed against the involved officers.
