OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 12/01/2021, DeKalb County Police Department and Atlanta Police Department officers searched for Edward Allen Gatling after investigators with the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office were shot earlier that day during an unrelated contact. Officers later responded to a report of a person in a wooded area near Wellington Circle and located Gatling hiding there. Officers confronted him and gunfire occurred. Officers shot him and he died at the scene. The incident followed a large multi agency search effort and drew substantial law enforcement activity in surrounding neighborhoods while authorities attempted to locate him.
