On 12/01/2021, Wilcox County Sheriff’s Office personnel responded to a domestic violence call on Shamburger Road after a woman reported threats and ran from a residence. Billy Gilbert Bizzell followed her outside while firing a weapon and struck responding personnel, critically injuring one and wounding another. Officers returned fire during the confrontation and he died at the scene. Reporting described conflicting official accounts about whether the fatal gunshot resulted from officer fire or was self inflicted, and multiple state and federal agencies joined the investigation after the incident triggered a large emergency response in the rural community.
