During entry, Walker shot a detective in the leg and barricaded himself inside the apartment with a two-week-old infant, prompting a nine-hour standoff involving emergency response teams and negotiators. After a fire ignited inside the building, Walker ran out holding the infant while firing a handgun toward officers. Police returned fire and struck him; he was pronounced dead at the scene.
