On 05/23/2021, officers responded to a domestic disturbance report at a residence on Thurston Avenue in Thomaston where John Bussey was encountered holding a firearm. Officers shot and killed him during the encounter. Police opened fire and Bussey died at the scene. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation conducted the independent review of the shooting following the initial call response.
