On 02/27/2021, Sedona police responded to reports of a man firing a weapon inside a business on North State Route 89A. Officers located Edward Kayer, 60, outside the location and initiated negotiations while maintaining distance. During the encounter, Kayer shot himself. He was transported to a hospital where he died from the self inflicted gunshot wound. The incident followed earlier emergency calls about shots being fired inside the establishment and resulted in a regional investigation into the police response.
