OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
Two teenagers had allegedly burglarized a smoke shop and stolen two vehicles. Onondaga County deputies located the vehicles on Danzig Ave and tried to stop them. The teenagers drove toward police while trying to get away and police fired shots into the vehicle. The car drove away but was found shortly after that with the driver and passenger both dead from police bullets. A controversy surrounding the deaths soon emerged when it was found the officer had acted questionably throughout such as turning off his lights/sirens, not having dashcam or bodycam activated during the events, boxing in the car, then killing the teens when trying to drive around the blockade, etc. The boys had both been immigrants from South Sudan. The officer who had the dashcam and bodycam both turned off when hunting and killing the boys was cleared by the DA on 09/21/2023 with the comment that the officer “feared for his life” when the boys tried to drive around him when he boxed them in and deliberately stepped in front of their car.
