On 03/29/2022, Alaska State Troopers responded to a reported armed home invasion on Edelweiss Drive in Wasilla. Dispatchers received a 911 call stating a man had forced entry into a residence and fired a weapon inside. Troopers arrived, secured the home, and began searching the surrounding wooded area after the man left the residence. Troopers located Joshua Baert nearby during the search. According to the Alaska Department of Public Safety, Baert fired shots during the encounter. Troopers returned fire and shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Alaska Bureau of Investigation conducted a review of the shooting, consistent with protocol for trooper-involved deaths.
