On 04/20/2022, Duluth police responded to 715 East 12th Street in Duluth after Hermantown police notified them that a relative, Brandon Taylor Cole-Skogstad, may be armed and experiencing a mental health crisis. Officers approached the residence and, after hearing a shot from inside, coordinated with mutual aid agencies before entering later that afternoon. Inside the home, law enforcement located the bodies of four family members and a dog, all deceased from apparent gunshot wounds, and Cole-Skogstad, who died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Investigators believe Cole-Skogstad shot his aunt, uncle, and two cousins before killing himself.
