On 06/04/2022, Philadelphia Police Department officers responded to reports of a man with a firearm in the 200 block of South Street during a crowded weekend evening. Officers identified Gregory “Japan” Jackson, 31, and pursued him on foot through the entertainment district. Police stated Jackson was holding a handgun while running. Officers opened fire during the pursuit and shot him multiple times. Officers transported him to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The shooting occurred hours before the separate South Street mass shooting that drew national attention.
