On 06/19/2022, Lakeland Police Department officers responded to 3945 US-98 North after reports of a man acting erratically while armed. Officers located Christopher Joy, 35, in the parking lot of a business. Police stated Joy was holding a firearm during the encounter. Officers opened fire and shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement assumed control of the independent investigation, as required in officer-involved shootings in Florida.
