On 08/29/2025 around 10:30 a.m., San Antonio police responded to reports of gunfire in the 800 block of Cherry Street near the Hays Street Bridge. A 41-year-old man named Jaime Gonzalez had discharged a shotgun into the air following a road-rage incident. When officers arrived, the man pointed the shotgun at them. Joseph Merical, 35, barricaded himself inside the apartment with two kitchen knives. When officers partially forced open the door, he moved toward them with the knives. A standoff followed with negotiators and SWAT at the scene. Hours later, Merical exited the apartment and moved toward officers in the parking lot while still holding the knives. Police fired non-lethal weapons followed by bullets. Merical was struck, taken to a hospital, and pronounced dead. This was the fifth police shooting in Fresno this year.

On 08/24/2025, a deputy from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office attempted a traffic stop on a gold Toyota Camry near the Jimmie Dyess Parkway on-ramp to Interstate 20 east. The driver was identified as Martel Kyles, who was wanted for simple assault by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office and known for violent tendencies. On 08/23/2025 at approximately 2:40 p.m., a Gordon County deputy attempted to stop a Mercedes on Interstate 75 near Exit 317. Police escalated a chase that continued south to Exit 312 and into the intersection of State Route 53 and the bypass. The pursued vehicle crossed into oncoming lanes and collided head-on with another car. A bystander in the other car was killed, and three additional people were injured.

On 08/23/2025 around 11:45 a.m., Glastonbury Police attempted to stop a Toyota Camry after receiving reports of a woman slumped over the wheel at Main Street and Great Pond Road. Police escalated a chase, but then called it off. Minutes later, the pursued vehicle lost control on Route 17 near Overlook Court, crossed into oncoming lanes, and collided with a Honda Pilot. The driver of the Camry was killed. A driver and teenage passenger in the Honda were injured.

On August 22, 2025, Phillip Francis Jr., 44, was killed by a gunshot at the Woodspring Suites hotel on Hugh Wallis Road in Lafayette, Louisiana. Former Lafayette Police Department officer Kyle Jagneaux, 39, was involved in an altercation with Francis that escalated to the shooting. Jagneaux was arrested and booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center on a charge of manslaughter with bond set at $50,000. The officer was charged with manslaughter.

On August 22, 2025, deputies with the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence on the 1400 block of Anchorage Circle in Seminole. Deputies found 58-year-old Kimberly King-Judd with a graze wound to the back of her head. She was transported to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Her husband, 65-year-old Steven Grossman, remained inside the home armed. After deputies attempted negotiations, Grossman was found inside with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. He was transported to a hospital where he later died. Detectives are investigating the incident as a domestic violence case and possible attempted murder-suicide.

On August 22, 2025, Colorado Springs Police responded to an incident on the east side of the city near Cimarron Hills. A man allegedly fired shots at officers, who returned fire and shot him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were injured. The El Paso County Sheriff’s Office is conducting an independent investigation.

On August 22, 2025, around 11 a.m., Oklahoma City Police pursued a vehicle with two occupants following reports of a disturbance and possible armed robbery at a McDonald’s near Reno and Meridian avenues. The driver attempted to escape at high speed. Near South Portland Avenue and Newcastle Road, the vehicle hit a hump in the road, lost control, and crashed into the front yard of a home. The passenger died at the scene. The driver was critically injured and transported to a hospital.
