OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 02/13/2026, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office responded to a reported domestic disturbance involving Jose Cabrera and another adult near Foxtail Lane. Officers later located Cabrera’s vehicle outside a residence and instructed him to exit. According to law enforcement, Cabrera exited holding a knife and moved toward officers despite commands, at which point three officers discharged their weapons, striking him. Life-saving measures were attempted and Cabrera was transported to a hospital where he died from his injuries. The officers involved were on their first night patrolling without a training officer. An independent investigation by the State Attorney’s Office is underway and a subsequent JSO review will follow. Family members dispute whether Cabrera was holding a knife during the confrontation.
